Transaction costs at the border seem low for organized crime, which has shown itself to be quite resilient.39 Common smuggling routes for contraband include a corridor between British Columbia and Washington state, and the Akwesasne region.40 Illegal firearms used to commit criminal offences in Canada overwhelmingly originate in the United States.41 Conversely, transnational organized crime capitalizes on markets of opportunity to move drugs such as ecstasy and cannabis, which have lower penalties in Canada, from Canada to the US, and the amount of illicit trade from Canada to the Eastern US seaboard suggests that risks associated with crossing the border are low.42
